Understanding Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (now also termed MASLD — Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) affects more than 35% of Indian adults. It occurs when fat accounts for more than 5% to 10% of total liver weight, often driven by refined carbohydrates, insulin resistance, and sedentary lifestyle.
The 4 Grades of Fatty Liver Disease
- Grade 1 (Simple Steatosis): Mild fat deposition in hepatocytes with no inflammation; 100% reversible with diet and exercise.
- Grade 2 (Moderate Steatohepatitis): Increased fat accumulation causing mild liver enzyme (SGOT/SGPT) elevation.
- Grade 3 (Severe Steatohepatitis – NASH): Chronic liver inflammation leading to early fibrosis and cellular ballooning.
- Cirrhosis: Permanent scarring and irreversible loss of liver architecture, requiring specialized hepatology management.
Early Warning Symptoms of Liver Congestion
- Persistent dull ache or heavy fullness in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen.
- Unexplained chronic daytime fatigue and sluggishness.
- Mild jaundice or yellowing of the sclera (in advanced stages).
- High fasting triglycerides and elevated AST/ALT in liver function blood tests.
